Viticulture and Enology

Growing Our Own World-Class Employees

Crafting premium wines requires the collaborative efforts of viticulturists and vintners sensitive to regional conditions. Washington’s premium wine industry employs the equivalent of 14,000 full time workers. And it needs more college educated vineyard managers, field personnel, wine makers, and winery managers as it continues to expand.

In 2002, Washington State University introduced a Viticulture and Enology option within the Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture on the Pullman campus. The curriculum, the first of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, is science-based and hands-on. The interdisciplinary program is offered both on the Pullman campus, and since 2003, at WSU-Tri-Cities. Transfer students from community colleges are welcome and articulation agreements with Walla Walla Community College and Yakima Valley Community College facilitate transfers. And to ensure that quality science continues to be the mainstay of the Washington wine industry, WSU also features a robust program of graduate study. We offer master’s and doctoral degrees in topic areas that are foundational for growing good wine—horticulture, entomology, plant pathology, food science, molecular plant sciences and soil science. Graduates of these programs are the scientific leaders of the future that will keep the state’s wine industry cutting-edge and competitive.

WSU Extension offers two-year certificate programs in enology and viticulture on line primarily for people in the industry who are interested in upgrading their skills. These programs provide basic and applied information required for the production of wine grapes and wine. The Viticulture Certificate consists of a series of 10 units and three two-day “Grape Camps” held over a two-year period. The Enology Certificate consists of a series of 10 courses and Wine Camps held over two years. Both certificate programs have an extensive waiting list.
